Every Friday, I write a post about unique singing voices not commonly heard in mainstream music in an effort to educate emerging artists and music lovers and inspire them to embrace their own quirks. This week I'm writing on Lucia Flores-Wiseman.
My latest TikTok reacting to Lucia's Blind Audition for The Voice back in mid-February or whenever it was means she deserves a post. Because in my opinion she's one of the most interesting voices this current season (and my family agrees with me, which says a lot). Also, I hope Adam doesn't let her down. You can listen to her audition and watch my reaction below:
Anyway, her Spotify profile says that she blends Americana coffee house, indie, folk, and jazz vocals to create her sound. She even performed with Brandi Carlile. Her voice definitely reminded me of Amy Winehouse, but with rasp added at the right moments like Brandi.
Since growing up a third-culture kid means I listen to artists in all sorts of languages like Vusi Mahlasela (Zulu and other South African ones), Värttinä (Finnish), several Irish Gaelic bands and classical opera which is Italian, German and French among others, hearing a song in Spanish isn't really anything new to me. Armed with just an acoustic guitar, it gets the emotional point of a funeral song about a weeping widow across well. But personally, I've never heard Spanish music sung with a bunch of voice quirks before. Shakira and her ridiculously strong vibrato are the closest I can think of while writing this post.
If the video above didn't convince you enough, here's some of her songs that you can sample here, including a full studio version of her audition song, "La Llorona":
Anyway, that's all for this week. I can't wait to see how far Lucia goes in the competition, and if God forbid Adam screws up and she's out early, I will personally fly to LA and come after him. Although there is a good chance her Battle might air before I publish this post, but nevertheless, it still stands. (Edit on 17 March 2025: she won her battle; hallelujah. Still stands though since we don't know how far she's gonna go yet.)
Stay tuned for next week's post on unique voices that inspire me!

Stay educated,
Alexia
